What is the thermal oxidation resistance of refractory materials and how to measure it?

Oxidation resistance refers to the ability of carbon-containing refractories to resist oxidation in a high-temperature oxidizing atmosphere. Carbon-containing refractories have excellent slag resistance and thermal shock resistance, making them widely used in metallurgy industry. However, carbon is easily oxidized, and once carbon is oxidized, the performance of the product will cease to exist. Improving the oxidation resistance of carbon-containing products, especially under high temperature conditions, is an important research content of carbon-containing refractories.

For carbon-containing refractories containing oxidation inhibitors, place the sample in a heating furnace, heat it to the test temperature at a specified heating rate in an oxidizing atmosphere, keep it at this temperature for a certain period of time, and then cut it into two pieces after cooling to room temperature and measure the thickness of its decarburized layer. The sample is a cube with a side length of 50mm or a cylinder with a diameter and height of 50mm. The heating rate is 8~10°C/min from room temperature to 1000°C, and 4~5°C/min from 1000~1400°C. Air is blown into the furnace at a flow rate of 4L/min. The holding time is 2h.



For carbon-containing refractories without oxidation inhibitors, the samples with a side length of 50 mm were firstly carbonized, the residual carbon content was measured, and the mass after carbonization was weighed. Then place it in a furnace, heat it up to 1000°C at a rate of 8-10°C/min in an oxidizing atmosphere, and keep at this temperature for 5h. After cooling to room temperature, weigh the mass after oxidation. Using the measured data, calculate the carbon loss rate.


Regarding other non-carbon-containing refractories, such as SiALON, ALON and oxide refractories, there is no unified standard for testing oxidation resistance.
