What is fused cast silica brick?

Fused cast silica brick, also known as electrocast silica brick or electrofused silica brick, is a type of refractory brick that is manufactured using a special fusion process. It is a high-quality refractory material known for its excellent thermal resistance, low thermal expansion, high chemical purity, and high strength at elevated temperatures.

The manufacturing process of fused cast silica brick involves melting high-purity silica (SiO2) in an electric furnace at extremely high temperatures, typically above 2000°C (3632°F). The molten silica is then cast into molds to form the desired brick shapes. Due to the high-temperature fusion process, the resulting brick has a dense and uniform microstructure with minimal voids and an exceptionally high resistance to thermal shock.

Fused cast silica brick finds various applications in industries where it is exposed to extreme thermal conditions, aggressive chemicals, or a combination of both. Some common applications include:

Glass Industry: Fused cast silica bricks are extensively used in the construction of glass furnaces, particularly in areas exposed to high temperatures, such as sidewalls, throat, and port arches. The brick's ability to withstand thermal shock and its low thermal expansion make it suitable for these demanding environments.

Steel Industry: These bricks are used in the construction of steelmaking furnaces, where they serve as lining materials to withstand the high temperatures and chemical reactions occurring during the steelmaking process.

Non-ferrous Metal Industry: Fused cast silica bricks are also utilized in non-ferrous metal smelting furnaces, such as copper and aluminum, where they can resist the corrosive effects of molten metals and high temperatures.

Petrochemical Industry: They are used in various high-temperature reactors and furnaces within the petrochemical industry, where resistance to extreme heat and aggressive chemical environments is crucial.

Fused cast silica bricks are preferred in applications where conventional refractory materials might fail due to their ability to withstand harsh conditions and maintain their mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. However, they can be relatively expensive compared to other types of refractories, so their use is often reserved for critical areas in high-temperature industrial processes.
