How to classify refractory bricks

Refractory materials generally refer to inorganic non-metallic materials with a refractoriness above 1580 °C. It includes natural ores and various products made by certain processes according to certain purposes. It has certain high temperature mechanical properties and good volume stability, and is a necessary material for various high temperature equipment. There are many ways to classify refractory materials. Divided by chemical composition: can be divided into acidic, alkaline and neutral.

Acidic refractory usually refers to refractory with SiO2 content greater than 93%. Its main feature is that it can resist the erosion of acid slag at high temperature, but it is easy to react with alkaline slag. Acid refractories mainly include quartz glass products, fused silica recombination products, silica bricks and amorphous siliceous refractories. Semi-siliceous refractories generally fall into this category. As for clay refractories, they are also classified as semi-acid or weak acid refractories. There are also zircon refractories and silicon carbide refractories as special acid refractories.

Basic refractories generally refer to refractories with magnesium oxide or magnesium oxide and calcium oxide as the main components. These refractories have high refractoriness and strong resistance to alkaline slag. Alkaline refractory materials are mainly used in basic steelmaking furnaces and non-ferrous metal smelting furnaces, and such materials are often used in the cement industry. Its main products are refractory materials such as magnesia, magnesia-chromium, forsterite, magnesia-aluminum, stone and lime. Among them, magnesia and white limestone are strongly alkaline, while chrome-magnesium and magnesia-chromium, forsterite and spinel are weakly alkaline.

At high temperature, refractories that are not easy to react significantly with acidic or basic slag are called neutral refractories, such as carbon refractories and chrome refractories. Some classify high-alumina refractories as neutral refractories with some acid tendencies, while chrome refractories are classified as neutral refractories with some alkaline tendencies.
